Cancer Therapeutics CRC researchers have worked in collaboration with researchers from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and Monash Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences to target acute myeloid leukaemia at its source.
Research from the team led by Prof Mark Dawson and Dr Laura MacPherson and published in the prestigious journal Nature has shown that the protein HBO1 is essential for the survival of leukaemic stem cells. Loss of HBO1 causes these cells to stop dividing. This discovery could lead to a more effective treatment for this aggressive and often incurable blood cancer.
