As we approach International Women’s Day 2020 we are featuring some of the women who are leaders within our organisation.
We continue this series with Chemistry Lead, Ylva Bozikis.
What is your role and what led you there?
I am a chemist and a member of Cancer Therapeutics CRC’s medicinal chemistry team, a project leader and a science lead. I have been part of Cancer Therapeutics since 2009 when I started as a synthetic chemist and have loved working for the company which has continued to support my growth and professional development.
Can you name a person who has had a tremendous impact on you? Maybe someone who has been a mentor to you? Why and how did this person impact your life?
It is very difficult to name one person as I can think of several people that has had a great impact on me. But one person who stands out is my grandmother. She was an incredibly strong and brave woman who for example, as a 90-year old, lived by herself in the middle of a dark Swedish forest! She was also the most caring and kind person with a heart of gold who always tried to teach me how to be a decent human being and I hope that I have learnt one or two things from her.
Where do the great ideas come from in your organisation?
I would say they come from a network of thinkers pondering similar issues.
What is one characteristic that you believe every leader should possess?
What advice would you give someone going into a similar position for the first time?
Make sure you love what you do in your profession. That’s what my dad used to say to me when I was choosing my career path and this is what I will say to my children.
What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop in your role?
I try to expose myself to new situations which may be slightly uncomfortable and try to learn as much as possible.
